Homeschool for the 21st Century

Conquering Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Gone are the days when it was only a bonus to know how to use word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software. Now, it’s practically a necessity to utilize these programs in everyday life, whether for school, a job, or something as simple as making an address database to track correspondence. Most individuals can open these programs and figure out enough to produce basic results. Wouldn’t it be nice to know how to make a stellar document or know time saving techniques? How about being able to create charts and tables that adjust as you input more data? Or even learning how to to produce presentations that are sleek and professional in appearance? Sound like something useful to you? You’re in the right place! In this 15-week course, we will learn how to effectively and efficiently use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Students will learn the basics and explore many of the more advanced features to help them put their work above and beyond that of their peers. A final project will tie all three programs and demonstrate the valuable knowledge obtained through this course.

This course will also contain an extra credit unit to learn touch typing. Credit will be awarded when students reach at least 30 wpm and 90% accuracy on the final test.

Materials

Microsoft Office in Practice (2019 Edition) ISBN: 9781260079906 or 9781260818536. This is an older edition that can be purchased in many binding types for you to pick from. AbeBooks, ThriftBooks, Amazon, etc. all have it used for under $20.

In addition, Microsoft Office 365 will be used for the class – Microsoft Office 2021 or 2019 are acceptable as well. With over a dozen versions of Word and the fact that Microsoft changes menu items and locations for features often, if you choose to use another version of Office products it could be challenging to find the menu items and features may not even be present. It would be impossible to have notes to accommodate every version and it would be time consuming to prepare a class for all the versions.

The class will discuss keyboard shortcuts. Shortcuts differ between Windows and Mac. The instructor has both but will use Windows for the class as that is most widely used by students.

However, inventory will be taken at the start of class and if students are using Mac, menu
changes or short cut differences will be called out.
